In the dynamic landscape of business transformation, effective leadership is the linchpin that propels organisations towards success. Leaders who understand and adopt different styles can guide their teams through change and drive exponential growth. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the four key leadership styles for transformation and share a success story from a past client.

  1. Visioning Style:

The first step in successful transformation is resetting the organisation’s vision. Leaders employing the Visioning Style align stakeholders and initiate change by creating a clear and compelling vision for the future. This style sets the foundation for a transformative journey, creating a roadmap for success.

  1. Mobilising Style:

Once the vision is set, leaders need to roll up their sleeves and instigate cultural shifts within the organisation. The Mobilising Style involves actively engaging with the workforce to implement the changes identified during the visioning stage. This hands-on approach ensures that the desired transformation takes root in the organisation’s culture.

  1. Developing Style:

Assessing gaps, upskilling, and scouting for innovation are integral components of the Developing Style. This style focuses on addressing challenges within a well-established culture, identifying areas for improvement, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation.

  1. Enabling Style:

Empowering teams, fostering autonomy, and seeking growth opportunities characterise the Enabling Style. Leaders adopting this style create an environment where teams feel supported, motivated, and capable of driving their own success. This style is crucial for sustaining transformation and unlocking the full potential of the workforce.

Success Story: A Client’s Transformation Journey:

A client, amidst rapid growth, faced the challenge of managing the pace of expansion and promoting staff into management roles without adequate preparation. Recognising the potential consequences – growth decline and high employee turnover – they sought a tailored leadership and transformation program.

After engaging with me, the results were remarkable. The organisation achieved a consistent 15% year-over-year growth across multiple sites, led by top-performing leaders. Additionally, there was a significant 19% reduction in employee absenteeism, indicating a positive shift in organisational culture and employee engagement.

The How:

The success with this client was grounded in asking the right questions, understanding their unique needs, and becoming an integral part of their transformative journey.

Leveraging wide-ranging expertise, we designed a tailored program that included assessments, practical implementations, and continuous learning.

Here is a description of this client’s journey map, part of which later become their blueprint for ongoing leadership development.

After initial one-on-one conversations with key members of the existing leadership team and randomly selected people in the organisation, an analysis was done, giving us a snapshot (in time) of the organisation; including a feel for its culture.

A report was then created and presented to key stakeholders with recommendations for a successful leadership and business transformation programme. This led to a leadership away day and training event, where a colleague and I facilitated interactive sessions to bring everyone on to the same page. The programme included communicating and getting buy-in for the new vision and aspirations for the leadership transformation programme.

Prior to this, all leaders and aspiring management staff had undertaken a short, contextualised leadership style assessment. The results were then revealed on the away day, where we also explained the implications both at collective and individual levels.

This exercise enabled the appreciation of their strengths and how this could be aligned to the overall future strategic growth vision and execution plans of the organisation. Individual and organisational values and alignment played a part in the training programme too, as well as role plays.

By the end of the day, a tailored engagement plan was drafted, which I then refined and designed to form the basis for the rest of the implementation of the leadership transformation programme. It drew on key human-centred (people-first) frameworks that enabled the organisation later craft their own blueprint for ongoing leadership development and transformation programmes.
